The Answer-First format is a method of structuring content that places the direct and concise answer at the top of the page, before developing context, evidence and details. It's the format preferred by generative AI engines for extracting and citing content in their responses.
AI engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity break pages down into individual passages. They evaluate each passage for relevance, clarity and factual density. Content that starts with general context before arriving at the answer has fewer chances of being extracted than content that immediately answers the question.
According to research on GEO, the Answer-First format can increase content citability by 30 to 40% compared to a classic format.
An Answer-First page generally follows this hierarchy:
Take the question "What is a GEO agency?". Instead of starting with the history of SEO and the evolution of search (classic format), an Answer-First page starts directly with: "A GEO agency specializes in optimizing brand visibility in responses generated by AI engines." Then it develops context, methods and expected results.
The Answer-First format isn't incompatible with depth of expertise. On the contrary, it makes it more accessible. AI can extract the direct answer for its synthesis, while noting that the content demonstrates in-depth expertise in the following sections. It's this combination of immediate clarity and depth that maximizes AI citation.
The Answer-First format is at the heart of our Answer-First Content service. In the "Do" phase of our IDO methodology, every pillar page, FAQ and case study is structured in Answer-First to maximize the chances of being extracted and cited by AI engines.
