Citability

Citability measures content's ability to be easily extracted, cited and reused by a generative AI engine in its responses. Citable content is clear, structured, factual and self-contained — each passage can be understood independently of the rest of the page.

The criteria of citability

Highly citable content combines the following characteristics:

  • Clarity — Short declarative sentences, precise vocabulary, zero ambiguity
  • StructureAnswer-First format, clear H2/H3 hierarchy, each section self-contained
  • Factuality — Numerical data, cited sources, verifiable evidence
  • Extractability — Sharp definitions, structured lists, comparative tables
  • Freshness — Visible update date, recent data, current examples

Citability vs editorial quality

Content can be well written without being citable. Brilliant storytelling with metaphors and suspense is pleasant to read for a human, but difficult to extract for an AI. Citability requires balance: content that responds immediately, proves what it claims and facilitates extraction, while remaining engaging.

How to evaluate citability

Our GEO checklist lets you evaluate the citability of every page on your site. In our GEO audit, we systematically analyze the citability of your existing content and identify the priority optimizations. It's the basis of the Identify phase of our IDO methodology.
