AI Overviews (formerly SGE — Search Generative Experience) are summaries generated by Google's artificial intelligence, displayed at the top of search results. They synthesize information from multiple web sources to provide a direct answer to the user's query, even before the classic organic links.
Google uses its Gemini model to analyze the best-ranked pages and generate a synthesis. The system selects passages from different sources, assembles them into a coherent response and cites the original pages. The process is similar to the RAG used by ChatGPT, but integrated directly into Google's results.
Since the announcement at Google I/O in May 2025, AI Overviews have been deployed in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages. In Belgium, their deployment already impacts the organic traffic of local companies — our detailed analysis covers the specifics of the Belgian market.
The introduction of Google AI Mode in 2026 goes even further by offering a complete conversational interface, similar to ChatGPT, directly in Google.
Appearing in AI Overviews requires structured, factual content demonstrating strong E-E-A-T. Pages in Answer-First format with FAQs, numerical data and cited sources are favored. For a complete strategy, consult our guide How to appear in Google AI Overviews.
AI Overviews accentuate the phenomenon of zero-click search. When Google provides a complete answer at the top of the page, the user often no longer needs to click on a link. That's why GEO becomes essential: being cited in the AI response is often more valuable than ranking position 1 in organic results.
